Dreesch

„The year was 1990 and the border that seperated Germany had just been opened. My parents moved with my sister and me to the west. Our destination was Schleswig-Holstein in Northern Germany. I was born in 1984 and all I can remember from the time before we left are the beautiful sommerdays we spent in our old home – a prefabricated housing estate in Schwerin called »Dreesch«. I knew so many children that lived there and for us the whole place was just one giant playground. The streets where filled with people and just so full of activity. I really liked it. After our stay in the »Dreesch« I spent the rest of my youth in a small town in Northern Germany. Everything was a little bit different here and I was called »Ossi« at school. It’s a derogatory term for people from the East, the former GDR. I laugh about it today. Since then, I have only seen the »Dreesch« when visiting relatives. Over the years the settlement became more and more abandoned. When we lived there every single flat was occupied, now most of them are empty and have been for years. At some point, my relatives moved to the countryside and the »Dreesch« became a distant memory.“
